Payments for studying abroad can be confusing. Here is a breakdown of the cost for what a semester and academic year abroad would look like. You will notice under the Tuition section, we discuss two separate invoices students are responsible for paying.
If you are looking for ways to help make your experience more affordable, visit the Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities pages.
Tuition (Providence College)
As mentioned on the Study Abroad Cost page, Providence College uses a Home School Tuition Policy for Fall/Spring and Academic Year students. This means that students receive two (2) invoices for the study abroad semester or year.
- Invoice 1: Students pay regular PC tuition and the $1,000 PC Study Abroad Fee to Providence College.
- Invoice 2: Students pay all non-tuition program costs, including a non-refundable deposit, directly to the program provider or host institution. Non-tuition costs may include, but are not limited to, housing, health insurance, orientation, meals, and excursions.
Once the student pays the first invoice to Providence College, PC will then pay the program for tuition costs only, up to the PC tuition rate.
Please view the Home School Tuition Policy FAQ for more information.
Study Abroad Fee (Providence College)
In addition to paying PC tuition (as stated in the ‘Tuition’ section above), all students participating in a semester or academic year study abroad program are assessed a $1,000 study abroad fee. This is a one time fee by Providence College. Students will be invoiced in the billing cycle immediately prior to the study abroad semester or year.
With this fee, students:
- Maintain their status as full-time enrolled students at Providence College.
- Retain course registration priority, as established for their Class Year.
- Retain housing priority status, for those in residence-on-campus.
- Have access, while abroad, to CyberFriar, Sakai, HELIN Library Catalog and Subject Databases, as well as their PC email account.
- Have access, while abroad, to their academic advisor and to the services of the Center for Global Education. Students will also have access to the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate & Graduate Studies.
- Receive faculty review, articulation, and approval of courses taken abroad.
- The processing of academic credit earned abroad.
- The posting of all credit and grades earned on their PC transcript by the Office of Enrollment Services.
- Are provided with academic oversight of programs. They receive periodic on-site evaluation visits by the Center for Global Education and PC faculty.
The $1000 study abroad fee is paid electronically through CyberFriar (Cashnet) between March 1 and May 1. This will confirm participation in study abroad. Students can pay this deposit via CyberFriar through electronic ACH only.
PC Tuition and the study abroad fee will be billed by, and paid to, Providence College. All other program expenses (non-tuition fees) will be invoiced by and paid directly to the program provider or host institution. Providence College will not waive the fee for any semester or academic year study abroad students.
Program Costs (Program Provider)
As mentioned above, students pay all non-tuition program costs, including a non-refundable deposit, directly to the program provider or host institution. Non-tuition costs may include, but are not limited to, housing, health insurance, orientation, meals, and excursions. For more specific details on what is included in the program cost, students should contact the program provider as program costs change frequently.
Additional Expenses (Varies)
Students should budget for other expenses not included in their program’s cost. These expenses can include passport and visa fees, roundtrip airfare, independent travel, meals (in most cases), textbooks, gym memberships, cellphone expenses, etc.
