Where did you study abroad and for how long?

Rome for my junior year (two semesters) in 2011-12.

Why did you choose this country/program?

I’ve always loved Italy since I went there on a high school trip. I studied Latin for many years in middle school and high school, so I had extensive background knowledge about ancient Rome. And, as someone who loves history, I figured Rome was the best place for me!

Favorite class/academic experience while there?

Art & Archaeology of Ancient Rome. Our professor was the coolest Italian woman who also was one of the top tour guides in the city of Rome. She brought us to the most interesting places that I never would have known about otherwise! All our classes were on-site at museums or ancient monuments, and I learned so much while having so much fun.

Favorite outside-the-class experience?

My fall break trip to Central and Eastern Europe. While many of my friends went to Paris or Dublin, I decided to go on a 10-day trip to Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic. I figured when else would I really have an opportunity to visit these places? I’m so glad I went because I made incredible friends while exploring some truly amazing and unique cities (and eating some great food!).

What did the opportunity to study abroad mean to you as a Providence College student?

Studying abroad has truly changed me as a person and as a student. I see the world through a completely different lens now. As a PC student, I think anyone who has the means and a little room to maneuver with their major and core requirements should absolutely study abroad. This opportunity to explore the world and grow as a person should not be passed up, because you will almost certainly never have this opportunity again to live abroad, take classes, travel, and have fun with your friends without having to worry about working and other “real-world” responsibilities.

Not only was it the most fun I’ve ever had in my whole life, but I’ve met people from so many different backgrounds who have opened my eyes to different ways of thinking and perspectives on life. I’ve become so much more confident and independent, and as a senior about to graduate this spring, I actually feel ready to take on the real-world now. I’ve had some amazing years here at PC but studying abroad has shown me that there is so much more out there to see and do. I fully intend to get back out there and see the world after I graduate.
