Major: Public and Community Service Studies major and a writing minor
Where did you study abroad and for how long?
Stellenbosch, South Africa, for five months in the Spring of 2012.
Why did you choose this country/program?
Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to travel to Africa, and I was fascinated by both the cultural and academic opportunities offered through Stellenbosch University. The out-of-classroom experiences that were offered truly made my study abroad experience because I was able to interact with a variety of community members and immerse myself in the local culture.
Favorite class while there?

Learning for Sustainable Community Engagement (LSCE). I had the opportunity to work with other international students as classroom facilitators in a local primary school. The course was challenging, as it forced me to confront a number of social, economic, and political problems in South Africa. Yet, it was also my most rewarding academic experience since I was able to put into practice many of the ideas I have been developing in PSP.
Favorite outside-the-class experience?
Some of my favorite excursion experiences include waterfall hikes, getting a hug from an ostrich, kissing an elephant, coming face-to-face with a shark, and bungee jumping off the highest bungee bridge in the world!
What did the opportunity to study abroad mean to you as a Providence College student?
Studying abroad brought the College’s mission of “be transformed” to life. Immersing myself in a completely new culture, I was placed in situations outside of my comfort zone, which broadened my perspective on international cultures and helped me realize my role as a global citizen. Additionally, working on community engagement projects gave me another service-learning experience and furthered my passion for international youth development. The whole experience challenged and excited me and has made me reflect on my philosophy of service and what I am looking to do after graduation.
