Global Education Week 2023

During the week of Monday, September 25th, through Thursday, September 28th, the Center for Global Education is excited to present to the PC community Global Education Week!

Global Education Week is a week dedicated to promoting study abroad opportunities and international experiences. From Passport Day to info and support sessions, Global Education Week offers something for all PC students, faculty, and staff.

Monday, September 25th

Study Abroad Fair (6-8pm, Slavin ’64 Hall)

Kick off study abroad application season with the CGE’s annual Study Abroad Fair! This event is a perfect opportunity to learn more about studying abroad, to become familiar with PC’s approved program offerings, and to meet with program affiliates. Whether you have already decided on a program or are looking to explore your options, the Study Abroad Fair truly has something for everyone.

The application for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semester study abroad will open on Tuesday, September 26th.

Tuesday, September 26th

International Lunch Hour (12-1pm, Slavin 116 Executive Dining Room)

Take a break and have an international lunch with a PC international student. Our international graduate student presenter, Nhan Nguyen, will share information about his home country of Vietnam, his personal experiences living there, and what it has been like for him to be an international student here at PC.

At the conclusion of Nhan’s presentation, a light lunch of Vietnamese banh mi will be served.

This event is open to all PC students, faculty, and staff. Please note that a maximum of 30 people can be accommodated, and advanced registration is required. Submit your RSVP here by Wednesday, September 20th. We look forward to an educational and delicious lunch!

Passport Day (12-3pm, Slavin Fishbowl)

Need a brand new passport? Need to renew an old passport? All PC students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in Passport Day, an opportunity to apply for a passport conveniently on campus. We will be hosting the Providence Post Office, a designated passport agency, and its staff will be processing your passport applications.

Please note that this event is only open to the PC community.

How to Participate:

    • Step 1: Complete this quick form by Friday, September 15th, to indicate you will be attending the event. We are using this information simply to inform the Post Office of number of attendees so that they bring the approrpriate amount of support staff.
    • Step 2: Print out the instructions and passport application that meets your needs (brand new application or renewal application). The links to the applications are highlighted in yellow within the instructions.
    • Step 3: Follow the directions carefully to complete your application and gather all supporting documentation (make sure to have copies, especially license front and back).
    • Step 4: Bring everything to the Slavin Fishbowl between 12-3pm whatever time works for you. No appointment needed!

Photos will be available on site, but if you would rather obtain your pictures ahead of the event to save time, you are able to do so and bring them with your application. Some pharmacies and AAA locations offer this service.

Faculty-Led Information Tables (12-3pm, Slavin Atrium)

Faculty-led programs are short-term and a great addition or alternative to a traditional semester long study abroad program. Travel with a group of PC students and faculty leaders to various locations around the world.

During this event, Spring and Maymester 2024 faculty leaders will have tables set up and be available to discuss their programs in depth with interested students. This is a perfect opportunity to learn more details about available programs, have your questions answered, and get to know the faculty leaders themselves.

PC in England Faculty-Led Info Session (4:30-5:30pm, Ruane 206)

Faculty-Led Program: PC in England: C.S. Lewis’s Oxford

This one-credit Humanities Reading Seminar offers an introduction to the life and thought of one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century, C.S. Lewis, in the context in which he spent most of his adult life, the University of Oxford. Read and analyze a few representative texts from across Lewis’s corpus as well as visit sites in Oxford that played a significant role in his spiritual development and helped shape the Oxford he knew and loved.

Some sites and highlights include:

    • Walking tour of Oxford
    • Tour of Magdalen College, University Church of St. Mary the Virgin
    • Tour of The Kilns (C.S. Lewis’s home) and a visit to Lewis’s grave
    • Day trip to London

PC in Italy Faculty-Led Info Session (6-7pm, Ruane 206)

Faculty-Led Program: PC in Italy: Ambition and Beauty in the Eternal City

Rome has stood at the center of the Western world for over 2,000 years—first as republic, then as empire, then as Church. It is a city which inspires our wonder at the heights of human achievement. “Ambition and Beauty in the Eternal City” invites you to encounter Roman political greatness and artistic beauty. We’ll first examine how Rome’s political transformations shaped the virtues of its citizens. Then we’ll behold firsthand the greatness and beauty of its ancient ruins, imperial artefacts, and sacred masterpieces. This interdisciplinary course offers you an unforgettable experience: immersion in Rome’s architecture and churches, evening strolls down cobblestone streets, dinners and discussions in piazzas and gardens. Our two weeks in Rome will also include daytrips to Florence, Orvieto, and Pompeii.

Some sites and highlights include:

    • Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, Borghese Gallery, Capitoline Museums
    • Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Baths of Diocletian
    • St. Peter’s Basilica, Catacombs, sacred art “Church Crawl”
    • Daytrips to Florence, Pompeii, and Orvieto
    • Group dinners, picnics, and walks

Take your final semester of DWC abroad in London! Visit this informational table hosted by the Spring 2025 CIV in London faculty team, Dr. Christopher Arroyo and Dr. Eric Bennett, to ask questions and learn more about this unique study abroad opportunity found only at PC.

Want to learn more about studying abroad and what it is like? Stop by our Global Ambassador table to find out and ask your questions! Our Global Ambassadors are PC students who were once like you, navigating the study abroad process along with an entirely new country and culture. Our attending Global Ambassadors are ready to share what they know with future students considering study abroad. They are a great resource as they have first hand experience and advice that can help you decide if a program or location (or even study abroad in general) is right for you.

    Global Studies Study Abroad Panel (4:30-6pm, Ryan 106)

    The Global Studies Department will be hosting a Study Abroad Panel for Global Studies and other student majors that are interested in going abroad. This panel gives students an opportunity to ask questions about living and studying in another country.

    Financing Study Abroad (5-6pm, Harkins 332)

    Questions about the costs of studying abroad? Attend this info session with Stephanie Massa, CGE Study Abroad Advisor, to learn more about the finances surrounding different types of study abroad programs along with scholarship opportunities. This is a great opportunity to ask your questions and receive direction to helpful resources on the CGE website and around the PC campus.

    PCSB Study Abroad Student Panel (6-7pm, Ryan 102)

    Join the CGE and International Business Club to learn more about the study abroad experience specifically for PC Business majors. Nevena DiSaia, Associate Dean of Global Education and PCSB study abroad advisor, will present general basic information about the study abroad process. Attendees will then have an opportunity to engage with a panel of PCSB student speakers. The panel will provide personal study abroad testimonies and advice for prospective students. There will also be an opportunity to ask the student panel questions.

    Thursday, September 28th

    PC in South Korea Faculty-Led Info Session (10-11am, Hunt-Cavanagh Hall 202)

    Faculty-Led Program: PC in South Korea: Modern Korea: The Colonial Period, the Cold War, and Beyond

    This course examines modern Korean history in light of Korea’s place in global politics and culture from its Colonial Period (1905-1945) through the present day. The course combines academic study and field experience. Students will engage in intensive discussion of readings, visual and other primary source materials, and films during the oncampus portion of the class, followed by field experiences in South Korea tailored specifically to reinforce and explore more deeply course themes/materials. Finally, students will engage in 1) photography and digital storytelling or 2) independent research projects where they will building on both their academic learning and their field experiences.

      • Hyundai Factory Tour in Ulsan
      • Temple tours in Kyung Ju
      • United Nations Memorial Park and city tour in Busan

    PC in Puerto Rico Faculty-Led Info Session (2-3pm, Feinstein 117)

    Faculty-Led Program: PC in Puerto Rico: Health Care, Language, and Cultural Practices

    This program consists of an immersion experience in Puerto Rico intended to expand the students’ understanding of its history, culture, health determinants and health care delivery system. The program will examine the impact of culture, history, politics, and disasters on health from multiple perspectives using a wide variety of learning experiences (For example: visits to museums of arts and history, Museum of Pharmacy, health clinics, and hospitals located in rural areas as well as in the city of Ponce). This program also provides students the opportunity to increase their Spanish language ability in conversation as well as medical language. Students will have observational learning experiences in health settings that provide opportunity to practice their Spanish skills with persons seeking health services as well as with medical personal. Students will compare different health services in the region and reflect on the health determinants. Intermediate knowledge of Spanish required.

    Some sites and highlights include:

      • Excursions and cultural experiences in Ponce and other areas of Puerto Rico, including San Juan (i.e visit to San German, old San Juan, and Museum of Art of PR)
      • Visits to health centers in rural and urban areas in which students will conduct clinical observations by shadowing medical personnel and will make themselves available for a mini research project and for any organizational work needed in the clinics (i.e Castañer Hospital, clinic in Adjuntas, MedCenter in Ponce, etc.)

    Attend this info session with Dr. Jessica Mulligan (HS) and Dr. Monica Simal (WLC) to learn more about this exciting program!

    Academic Planning for Study Abroad (2-4pm, Library, SSC Academic Advising)

    Get a head start on your study abroad application! SSC Academic Advisors will be available during this resource session to provide support with completing the four-year plan you will be required to submit to the CGE for your study abroad application and approval.

    It is strongly recommended that you start working on your four-year plan independently and then bring your rough draft with you to this session. The purpose of this session is for SSC Academic Advisors to give you feedback and direction with your plan and to answer your questions.

    The four-year plan can be found on the CGE website Document Center page. There is a fillable version that you can complete electronically. The CGE will also accept handwritten and scanned copies of the form if you prefer to print it out to work on it in that way.
