Summer Programs

Students may elect to spend a summer abroad in lieu of, or in addition to, a semester program. Students can select a summer program through our partner program providers. While program lengths vary, the typical summer program is between 4-6 weeks and can be up to twelve weeks long. Students also have the option to participate on a summer faculty-led program depending on program offerings. Check out our PC Faculty-Led Abroad page for more information.

Students can participate in a summer study abroad program to study a language, a specific topic, or participate in an internship, a research project, or service-learning opportunity.

Eligibility

Rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors (i.e. completed their Freshman year) may study abroad over the summer. PC requires students to be in good academic standing in order to participate in a study abroad. For summer programs, there is no minimum GPA requirement for College approval. However, each study abroad program will have its own set of eligibility requirements. This could include GPA requirements, course pre-requisites, and language requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to research the program and ensure that they meet the minimum eligibility requirements.

Finances

The cost of a summer program varies and depends on many factors (housing, meals, excursions, course fees, etc). All tuition and program fees will be billed to the student directly and are payable to the program provider. In order to receive academic credit for the summer abroad program, students will be billed a $200 study abroad fee by PC.

For more information on the $200 study abroad fee as well as helpful information on budgeting, financial aid, and scholarships, please visit our Finances and Scholarships page.

Credit

Students can receive academic credit for a summer program as long as they complete a summer study abroad application, obtain prior approval by the Center for Global Education staff, take all classes abroad for a letter grade, and receive a C grade or higher. The course(s) will appear on the PC transcript with a “T” for transfer credit and will be contributed towards the total credit count. However, because it is a transfer credit, the grade will not impact the cumulative GPA.

Throughout the summer study abroad application process, students will also submit a Course Pre-Approval Form. On this form, students will list all potential courses they are considering taking and note how they wish the course to transfer back to PC (CORE requirement, major, etc.). The courses will then be reviewed by the appropriate academic department for approval.

Internships are subject to individual student review and cannot be pre-approved. Final approval for internships will be granted by department chairs after the program is complete.
